DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – A pair of protests Friday night will put a voice to concerns over law enforcement issues in North Texas. However, with about 1,000 people expected to be in attendance, the demonstrations bring up questions about safety.

Mothers Against Police Brutality said that this will be a peaceful protest. And they plan on having their own security on hand to make sure that it stays that way.

In the past, outside groups have shown up to their protests and taken them onto North Texas freeways. Hopefully, that will not happen on Friday night.

The protest in Dallas is a call for justice, similar to those seen in New York, Baltimore and other cities across the nation.

Freddie Gray suffered a severed spinal cord and died in police custody in Baltimore last week. The organizers of Friday night’s rally said that there are…

DENTON (AP) – Oklahoma’s Lauren Chamberlain broke the NCAA Division I softball career home run record Thursday night, hitting a grand slam for No. 91 in the Sooners’ 6-2 victory over North Texas.

She moved ahead of former UCLA star Stacey Nuveman with the fourth-inning shot off North Texas starter Kenzie Grimes that gave Oklahoma a 4-2 lead. Chamberlain also had a double in four at-bats.

« I feel really, really ecstatic and I feel like I’m finally able to finally fully enjoy the moment, » Chamberlain said. « I think the pressure of it along the way and the highs and lows, especially the lows, have made this moment so much sweeter. I think I’m able to celebrate now and kind of breathe a little bit and just relax and play softball.

« The eyes are off a little bit and I can just go back to…

Cowboys Speculation Shifts To Backs & Rushers

IRVING (AP) – Attention turns to running backs and pass rushers now that Dallas has used its first-round pick on Connecticut cornerback Byron Jones.

That’s not to say the focus will be on those spots for the Cowboys in the second and third rounds of the draft Friday night.

Owner and general manager Jerry Jones is still saying the team has what it needs behind Tony Romo even though NFL rushing champion DeMarco Murray went to NFC East rival Philadelphia in free agency.

And the Cowboys insist they weren’t surprised by free agent defensive end Greg Hardy’s 10-game suspension for his role in a domestic violence case.

But speculation will persist with solid prospects available at both positions. Dallas traded up to early in the second round for pass rushing help last year.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) – The New England Patriots keep using the draft to build a formidable young defensive line.

The defending Super Bowl champions drafted Texas defensive tackle Malcom Brown with the 32nd and final pick of the first round Thursday night, hoping they’ve found a replacement for five-time Pro Bowler Vince Wilfork.

They used their first-round pick on a defensive lineman for the third time in four years, following Syracuse defensive end Chandler Jones in 2012 and Florida defensive tackle Dominique Easley last year.

And just like he did with those two, coach Bill Belichick is reserving judgment on what Brown can contribute.

« He’s got a long way to go, like every rookie does coming in, » Belichick said. « It’s a lot different in this league. »

Brown agreed, saying he doesn’t assume he has a job locked up.

« I’m just relentless, » he said. « I…
